Does Medicare pay for someone to stay with my wife?

Mostly no. Here is exactly what it does pay for. Then the other doors: MO HealthNet, long-term care insurance, private duty, and VA pension if you served.

Does Medicare pay for someone to stay with my wife? The short answer is no, not for a person in the chair so you can sleep, shop, or go to your own doctor. Medicare is not a companion benefit. Husbands in Chesterfield, Ballwin, Eureka, and the rest of this metro type that sentence because the bill for sitting looks like health care. It is not, under Medicare's own rules. The rest of this page is the exact line Medicare draws, then the doors that are not Medicare: MO HealthNet, a long-term care policy if she has one, private duty paid privately, and VA pension if you served.

Does Medicare pay for someone to stay with my wife?

Medicare.gov's home health page lists what the program does not pay for: 24-hour-a-day care at your home, home meal delivery, homemaker services like shopping and cleaning unrelated to the care plan, or custodial or personal care that helps with daily living activities (bathing, dressing, or using the bathroom) when that is the only care you need. A husband asking for someone to stay with his wife is asking for that last item. The program does not cover it.

The long-term care page is shorter still. Medicare does not pay for long-term care. You pay all costs for non-covered services, including most long-term care. You may be eligible through Medicaid if you meet your state's requirements, or you can buy private long-term care insurance. Those two sentences are the rest of this article.

What does Medicare home health actually cover?

A different animal, with a different team. Medicare home health is skilled, part-time or intermittent, and ordered by a health care provider. To qualify she must need part-time or intermittent skilled services and be homebound. She will not qualify if she needs more than part-time or intermittent skilled care. Covered services include skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, medical social services, and part-time or intermittent home health aide care only if she is also getting a skilled service at the same time.

Medicare's usual reading of "part-time or intermittent" is skilled nursing plus home health aide time totaling as much as 8 hours in a day, and 28 hours in a week, with a short-term higher cap if the provider decides it is necessary. That is a visit. It is not a person in the chair until you get back from the store. Ask the care team whether home health is in the plan. This desk does not enroll anyone, and it does not guess whether she is homebound.

If the doctor has already named dementia, or has already named Parkinson's, the payment doors on this page are the same. This site does not diagnose either one. Questions about the diagnosis, the course, or the medicines belong with the physician who named it. Home care for a wife living with a dementia diagnosis in Missouri is still companion and personal care in her own house. The skilled pieces, if any, are home health. The sitting pieces are not.

If Medicare will not pay, what other doors exist in Missouri?

Four doors show up in this metro. Walk them in this order only if the first one fits. None of them is a promise.

1. MO HealthNet (Missouri Medicaid)

Missouri's Department of Social Services says MO HealthNet is different from Medicare and can help with benefits not normally covered through that program, like nursing home care and personal care services. Personal care is the sitting-and-bathing work Medicare will not buy on its own. Eligibility is a state determination. This site does not run the program and does not guess whether you will qualify.

Missouri DHSS lists in-home care as the second of its three types of care in the home, with Medicaid as the major payer: homemaker, personal care, respite. A physician orders those services. To request them, use the DSDS Call Center at 866-835-3505. That is an application with a wait, not a caregiver tonight.

2. Long-term care insurance

If she bought a policy years ago, pull the folder. Medicare.gov names private long-term care insurance as one way to pay for what Medicare does not. The policy, not this page, says what it covers, when a waiting period starts, and whether companion hours count. Call the number on the card. Do not take a website's word for a contract you already own.

3. Private duty / private pay

Missouri DHSS lists three types of care in the home. The third is the one husbands actually hire for sitting: private duty or private pay, paid with private funds or insurance. No physician order is needed for an aide giving personal care, respite, or companion care. There is no limit on amount or duration other than what you and the company set. This is the four-hour shift, the evening shift, and the overnight presence so you can sleep.

This company does not post a dollar figure for an hour, and this desk will not invent one. There is no public file of this company's prices, and this desk will not invent a metro average. If you want hours in your town, Call (314) 405-0887. New Plan Care is an independently owned non-medical in-home care company based in Chesterfield. The company works in Ballwin, Chesterfield, Eureka, Glencoe, Grover, Pacific, Valley Park, and St. Louis. It does no nursing tasks. Ask any company the same questions: what the shift includes, who comes if the caregiver is sick, and what a night costs. Get the number from them. Do not read it here.

4. VA pension, if you served

The Veterans Pension program pays monthly amounts to wartime Veterans who meet age or disability rules and whose income and net worth sit within limits Congress set. On top of a VA pension, Aid and Attendance or Housebound can be added for qualified Veterans and survivors who need help with daily activities (bathing, feeding, dressing) or who are housebound. You cannot receive both add-ons at the same time.

Between 1 December 2025 and 30 November 2026, VA sets the Veterans Pension net-worth cap at $163,699. For a Veteran with no dependents, that same table lists a Maximum Annual Pension Rate of $17,441 without Housebound or Aid and Attendance, $21,313 with Housebound, and $29,093 with Aid and Attendance. If you have a spouse, the table on that page lists a different MAPR. This desk does not file the claim. VA St. Louis Health Care lists facilities at 1 Jefferson Barracks Drive and at 915 North Grand Boulevard.

If the doctor named Parkinson's, or named a dementia, and you served, the VA doors above are still the VA doors. Whether you qualify is VA's determination. Whether a symptom has a name is the doctor's.
