Caring for My Wife
Back to the letter

Start here

Start here: a reading order for the husband on duty

Eighteen pieces is too many to read tonight. Here they are in the order the jobs usually land on a man caring for his wife, seven steps, with the one to open first in each.

You do not have to read this desk front to back. Most husbands arrive with one problem already on fire: she will not let him leave the room, she came home from the hospital yesterday, or the money question just came up at the kitchen table. Jump to the step that matches tonight. Then come back to step one when there is a quiet hour.

  1. Check on the man doing the work

Before the schedules and the phone calls, look at yourself for five minutes. Missed doctor visits, short sleep and skipped meals are jobs to fix, not a character flaw. Then write the backup sheet, because the plan for her cannot rest on one person who never gets sick.

  2. Find the hardest hours on the clock

Most homes have one stretch of the day that breaks everything else. For some it is the follow-you-everywhere afternoon, for some the early evening, for some the night. Read the one that sounds like your house and circle those hours on paper.

  3. Decide what to hand off first

Once you know the hours, decide the job inside them. Sitting with her is a real job. So is the morning shower. Lifting is the one to stop doing alone the soonest, and the technique belongs to her therapist, not to a website.

  4. If she just came home from the hospital

The first two weeks after a stroke unit or a rehab stay are mostly paperwork and a calendar of visits. The trap is thinking the home health visit covers the day. It does not. These two pieces show where the gaps sit.

  5. Knock on the right door

There are more doors than most men expect: in-home respite, adult day programs, a helpline that answers at any hour, groups for husbands. The trick is calling the one that matches her address and her situation, then writing down who you spoke with.

  6. Sort out who pays

Medicare pays for less of this than most people assume, and that is better learned now than on the first invoice. Read what it covers, then the other doors: MO HealthNet, long-term care insurance, private pay and the VA if either of you served.

  7. Make the break a habit

One afternoon off helps. A standing afternoon, the same day every week, changes the whole month. This last piece turns the four hours from an emergency into a routine she can get used to.

When you are ready to call someone

The numbers for St. Louis County, St. Charles County and the city are on the local help page, each one read on the organization's own site. If the hours need covering this week and you would rather talk to a company, the paid note on the front page goes to New Plan Care Solutions, a non-medical in-home care company that pays for that spot. Anything about her health, her medicines or her diagnosis goes to her doctor or her pharmacist first.
