A caregiver support group for husbands in St. Louis is a room, or a phone, of other men doing the same hours. This site will not print a Tuesday night address that will be wrong next month. It will give you the numbers that keep the current list, and the job that makes the meeting possible: someone in the chair while you are not.
The first number, day or night
The Alzheimer's Association 24/7 Helpline is 800.272.3900. It is a free service available around the clock, 365 days a year, with bilingual staff or interpreter service that accommodates more than 200 languages. Anyone can call. Ask for two things by name: a caregiver support group for husbands in St. Louis, and the Missouri Chapter. Ask what meets near your ZIP. Write the day, the time, the format (room or phone), and whether you have to register.
The Alzheimer's Association Missouri Chapter serves 86 counties in Missouri and 10 in Illinois. St. Louis County and the city sit inside that map. The helpline is the 24-hour door. The chapter is the local door. Use both if the first person you reach is not looking at a St. Louis list. The longer helpline briefing is on its own page on this site.
This desk does not require an Alzheimer's diagnosis to tell you to pick up that phone. The helpline's own page is written for caregivers and families. If the doctor has not named dementia, say that. Ask what they can still help with. If they route you elsewhere, take the next number. Do not hang up and decide there is no group.
The aging-office door, if the diagnosis is not dementia
The National Family Caregiver Support Program can serve family caregivers of people age 60 or older, and family caregivers of people of any age with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. Support for the caregiver is the point of that program. The Area Agency on Aging does the intake.
If her house is in St. Louis County, St. Charles County, Franklin County, or Jefferson County, the door is Aging Ahead, which has provided supportive services in those four counties since 1973, including caregiving services and community options consulting. Ask for a caregiver support group. Ask whether one is for spouses or for husbands. Take whatever is actually meeting.
If her house is inside the City of St. Louis, the St. Louis Area Agency on Aging is (314) 612-5918. Same questions. If you do not know which office covers the ZIP, the Missouri Senior Resource Line is 1-800-235-5503. You enter the ZIP and get transferred. NIA lists the Eldercare Locator at 800-677-1116. United Way 211 in Greater St. Louis tells people to dial 211, 24/7.
If you served, the VA Caregiver Support Line is 1-855-260-3274, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET. VA St. Louis Health Care lists facilities at 1 Jefferson Barracks Drive and at 915 North Grand Boulevard. Ask that desk about caregiver groups for spouses. Whether you qualify for VA caregiver programs is VA's determination, not this page's.
Who sits with her while you go
A group you cannot leave the house for is not a group you will attend. Write the block on a card. Tuesday. Someone arrives at 6:00. You leave at 6:15 after a short overlap. You are back at 8:30. The job is sit with her. Same chair. Television low. Pills stay in the labeled box.
The National Institute on Aging already named that block: respite care provides short-term relief for primary caregivers, from a few hours to several weeks, at home, in a facility, or at an adult day care center. A weekday evening so you can sit in a room of other husbands counts. You do not have to wait for a week away.
Family Caregiver Alliance says about 50 percent of caregivers get no outside help at all. That is the default that keeps men out of the room. Missouri DHSS lists private duty companion care with no physician order if the hours have to be this week. Aging Ahead or SLAAA if you can wait for a respite slot. The break page is the order of operations.
If she will not let you leave, that is a handoff problem, not a group problem. Stay for the overlap. Leave while she is looking at the other person. The shadowing sheet is that punch list.
Paid placement, disclosed
New Plan Care is an independently owned non-medical in-home care company based in Chesterfield, Missouri. A caregiver can sit with her for the hours of a Tuesday evening group in Ballwin, Chesterfield, Eureka, Glencoe, Grover, Pacific, Valley Park and St. Louis. It does no nursing tasks. Call (314) 405-0887.
New Plan Care pays for this spot. It is a client of OwnersFirm, which publishes this site, so read it as an advertisement with a phone number rather than as a result, a rank or a recommendation drawn from any of the articles on this page.
What a first meeting is for
You are not there to perform. You are there to get two things: one number you did not have, and one job another husband already ran (adult day, overnight sitting, a bath in the morning instead of at dusk). Write those two things on the card before you drive home. The Alzheimer's Association reports that 59 percent of dementia caregivers report high to very high emotional stress. That is a population fact. It is not a diagnosis of you. A group is one door. Your own physician is the door for anything about your health.
Family Caregiver Alliance, on family meetings, says they should include everyone who is or will be part of the caregiving team. A husband group is not a family meeting. If adult children need their own page after you are gone, Since Mom Died is written for that house. This page stays with you while you are still the one on duty.

What to do tonight
- Put 800.272.3900 on the fridge. Call it in the morning, or call it now. It is staffed at night.
- Write the four hours you would need in order to leave the house for a meeting. Day. Start. End.
- If you already know the aging office, put that number under the helpline. If you do not, put 1-800-235-5503.
- Do not collect five meeting flyers. Get one current slot from a live person, then fill the chair.
When to ask the care team or the doctor
- Anything about your sleep, mood, or missed care belongs with your own physician. A group is not that visit.
- A sudden change in her walking, swallowing, mood, or sleep belongs with the physician who treats her.
- If you cannot continue at all, Missouri's Adult Abuse and Neglect Hotline is 1-800-392-0210, seven days, 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. 911 after those hours if it is an emergency.
- Pills stay in the labeled box. A reminder is prompting. Changing a dose is medicine.
New Plan Care keeps the hours this page is about.
