After the Hospital
The Mattress Overlay Is Not the Bed. Compare Fit, Edge Height, and the Return Rule First.
Before you buy a pressure overlay for the bed you already have, measure the bed, the edges, and the transfer route, and get the return terms in writing.
Your wife is home, the bed is the bed you already have, and someone has suggested an overlay. Before you spend money on it, compare three things: whether it fits your bed, whether it changes how she gets in and out, and whether you can send it back if it does not work for either of you.
Local option: New Plan Care gives families in the St. Louis area in-home help so a parent can stay home: companionship, help with bathing and dressing, meals, and overnight care. Call (314) 405-0887.
Measure the bed you have
Measure the length and width of the mattress with the sheets off. Then measure the height from the floor to the top of the mattress at the edge where she sits. Ask the seller for the overlay's thickness, and add that thickness in your head to the height you measured. A thicker top raises the distance she has to lift her legs and can make the edge feel farther away. Write both numbers down.
Compare the edges, not only the top
The edge is where you will feel the difference most. Ask how the overlay finishes at the side, whether it has straps, and whether those straps go under the mattress or around the frame. Look at your bed frame too. If the frame has no rails and the mattress edge is the only thing you rely on, a soft overlay can shift under her. Ask the seller to show the edge in person or send a photo of it on a bed like yours.
Check the transfer route
Stand where you will stand when you help her move, and check whether the new height changes where your feet go, where the nightstand sits, and whether any sliding sheet or transfer aid you already use still reaches under her. If a therapist taught you a method, ask that therapist whether the new surface changes the setup. Do not guess at this part.
Ask for the return rule in writing
Ask how long you have to return the overlay, who pays return shipping, whether the cover can be washed and what the washing instruction says, and what happens if the cover tears. If the seller will not put the return terms in an email or on the receipt, treat that as the answer.
Compare two options on the same three points
Bring the measurements, the return terms, and the therapist's note about transfers to your next visit or call. Compare each option on fit, edge, and return, in that order. Pick the one you can measure, wash, and send back without a fight.
